Long Term Care Ombudsman ProgramVision: To ensure that residents of long term care facilities have quality of life and the right to a dignified existence, and can exercise their rights as a resident without fear or interference, coercion or reprisal.
Mission: Preserving the quality of life for long term care residents by empowering them and their families through education, advocacy and support.
They provide 4 Key Programs:
Long Term Care Facility Visits: Professional staff and specially trained volunteers visit long term care facilities weekly, getting to know residents, providing advocacy, support and education about their rights. When requested, they act as a voice for resident treatment and care to help mediate resolution, grievances and disputes.
Victims of Crime Program: Provide trained staff and volunteers who support nursing home residents who may be a victim of a crime, experience physical abuse, assault, or financial exploitation. They ensure the victims are protected through all available legal means and support them through the process including: meeting with residents; assessing their needs; cooperatively working with local law authorities, lawyers and courts; and providing referrals for residents as needed.
Information Center: Provides free and objective education and information services to individuals, families, and caregivers seeking placement assistance. This includes: clarifying nursing home regulations; assist families to cope with the costly and complicated process of long term care placement; provide directories of all licensed facilities and bed availability; and consultations to discuss Medicaid/Medicare, state, federal, and facility regulations, living wills, guardianship and durable powers of attorney.
Community Outreach and Education: Provided to community organizations to increase awareness of the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program and providing trainings and education to facility staff to increase knowledge regarding the needs of long term care resident's quality of life.
